Two little girls make an instant connection – with signs!

This guest blog post is by Jennifer Richards Sanchez and is part of our Making a Difference series. After the birth of my daughter, Ava-now 20 months old, I was talking with a woman at my work (Becky Sawruck) whose son, Aidan, is hearing impaired. She said that the Signing Time series had made a huge impact on their life and enabled early communication with their son. I think Aiden knew close to two hundred signs by the time he was just two years old. Becky loaned me the Baby Signing Time DVDs to start with and we began watching them when Ava was …

Making a Difference – Our Adoption Journey

Dear Signing Time Friends, Our family sincerely thanks you for what you have done for us. Your DVDs, board books, and flashcards have been such a blessing in our lives. For six years we tried to adopt from overseas. During that time, we lost three children we were supposed to bring home and were on a major emotional roller coaster. We already have five biological children. When people ask us why we wanted to adopt, the answer is simple.  There are so many children who need a home and love and want to give back, but do not have a …

After Baby Signing Time, then what?

Many parents wonder what to do after their child has learned all the signs in the Baby Signing Time series. For me, that answer is easy. With my oldest daughter, we started with Signing Time Volumes 1-3 because that is all that was available! We waited for each new volume and introduced them to her as quickly as they were released. Volumes 4-6 were released shortly after my second daughter was born. Then in 2005, I was lucky enough to start working for Two Little Hands Productions. I ran a signing playgroup that got invited to be part of the …

Signing Time Song + Your Slide Show = Winning Idea!

This idea is SO much FUN, we just HAD to share it with you: We DVR certain shows on Nick Jr. for our daughter. One day the TV was still on after the show and we heard the song, “In a House” and started dancing to it. We played it over and over. She loved it! So I bought the song online for $0.99 and created a slide show of our family. I put the video on my USB drive so I can show it to her on our car DVD player. It’s a special treat for her. – Jocelyn …

Walking with my Buddy 2010 – by Robert Malone

Well it’s fall here in New England and along with the brisk morning air and colorful foliage it is once again time for our local Buddy Walk. We usually attend the Western Massachusetts Down Syndrome Resource Group’s annual Buddy Walk in Westfield, Mass at Stanley Park near the end of each October. It is always great to reconnect with friends and families we have not seen since last year and marvel in all the changes a year brings. This year we were delighted to learn that the Massachusetts State Buddy Walk would be held in Wakefield, Mass and that Rachel …

The Road Less Traveled…Ouch

By Derek Brown – AKA Alex’s dad, Leah’s Uncle I chose to run a half marathon because I am in fantastic shape, I knew it would be easy, and I thought it would be a pleasurable experience.  Well, not really.  Actually, I chose to do it because my 11-year-old, Alex, decided to do it and asked me if I was up to doing it   with him.  What would you do? Now, just a bit of friendly advice here:  if you are going to run a half marathon, there is the way to do it, and then, of course, there is …

Out of the Chaos: Hard Work

Hard Work Excerpt #2 from Out of the Chaos: Notes on Raising Nine Independent Children By Lex de Azevedo, President of Two Little Hands Productions, and father of Rachel Coleman and Emilie Brown, the creators of Signing Time From 1974 through 1986, because I worked in the music business, we lived in a community called Toluca Lake outside of Los Angeles. I was determined that living in the city would not deprive my children of the opportunity to work. Since life in Los Angeles required year-round mowing, edging, raking, and weeding, I felt this would be the ideal opportunity to …
