  1. Our family is SO excited to come see you. You have made an incredible difference for our son, Matthew, especially, but also for our entire family.

When I was pregnant with Matthew, doctors told us that IF he lived through the pregnancy, he would probably only live a couple hours after birth. Down syndrome, multiple complex heart defects, kidney and brain abnormalities and two club feet gave him a “zero percent” chance of survival. To make a long story short, Matthew was born in Sept of 2005, and came home with us on Hospice care. At 6 months of age, the doctors were calling him a “true miracle,” as many of his heart defects had corrected themselves. His brain, kidneys, and feet were fine. One heart surgery later, he is expected to have a full life expectancy with no further intervention needed.

When Matthew had just turned two, we were introduced to Signing Time. Matthew took to it immediately, as did his older brother. We were amazed by how quickly Matthew learned the signs, and how easily he could begin to communicate his needs. We couldn’t buy DVDs fast enough to keep up! I can’t thank you enough for giving my son the gift of communication – for giving our whole family a way to understand what our little Miracle Matthew is thinking. It wouldn’t be until a year later that we learned that Matthew had significant hearing loss in both ears due to chronic fluid in the middle ear and multiple infections. By this time, Matthew had well over 100 signs in his “vocabulary,” and was communicating so much more than just his “needs.” Sign language has given him the ability to communicate his likes, dislikes, activities of the day, and whatever else is on his mind.

And, now Matthew has a 16-mo old little brother, who is using sign to tell us all sorts of things. He can only say “pa-pa” for Grandpa, but he was telling Grandpa all about the helicopter we saw today! And, no tantrums at the dinner table – our newest little guy politely signs “Milk, please.” or “All done!”

After placing tubes in his ears, Matthew’s hearing is normal. He still primarily uses sign language to communicate with us, but is putting sounds with his signs now. “Signing Time” videos are our best Speech Therapy, as he talks more while he’s watching them than anywhere else!

What I really wanted to tell you, though, is that YOU, Rachel, are his comfort. Through hospitalizations, procedures, ear infections, and surgeries, when nothing else can calm and comfort our little Matthew, YOU can. We would put on a “Signing Time” DVD, and he would immediately relax – you were better at comforting him than I was, most of the time!

I know this is a long comment, but just wanted to let you know that you have one VERY big fan coming to see you in Portland. We were disappointed that the VIP tickets were sold out, but we know it will be a great experience anyway.

  2. My daughter has arthrogryposis, a joint/muscle disorder. We never thought she could sign as she has limited use of muscles. BUT the ST brought out Baby Signing Time DVD to let her see. She watched it three times that night and bam knew them all. She modifies them for her body, how she can move…. we immediately bought ALL the DVDS.

She is getting more vocal now and using aug com stuff… BUT she still signs here and there. And her sign for banana has been modified… but you know what? She gets a banana in her blend every day(she is tube fed and I make her food…. didn’t pump 26 months 5 days to open a can of formula!) because she asks for them.

Thank you for all you do. She is so stoked to see you tomorrow!

  3. I so wish I had discovered BST sooner! We LOVE Baby Signing Time at our house and it has helped my twins with their communication so much! I am so bummed to learn you were here in April and we missed it! We just discovered the signing time series this summer. I sure hope you come back to Portland someday – we wouldn’t miss it!

Would you ever consider coming to New York….Manhattan or Long Island? Please think about it.
